Raccoons love to take shelter inside residential homes, especially in places like the chimney. To a raccoon, chimneys are like big, hollow trees. Additionally, they serve as a safe, quiet, dry place for female raccoons to set up a nest, give birth, and raise a litter of baby raccoons. Raccoons are great climbers, so they have no problem climbing on and off the roof to access the chimney flue.
The Dangers of Raccoons
Raccoons are a nuisance. These annoying and destructive pests cause damage to your home, spread garbage and droppings around your property, dig in your garden, and steal your pets’ food. They carry parasites or diseases that can be passed on to pets and humans. Raccoons are dangerous when they attack. They have been known to kill or injure cats and dogs.
Therefore, if you hear noises in the chimney, usually just above the fireplace, you could have a raccoon. Sometimes homeowners see a raccoon climbing on and off the roof. However, there is not always visual proof. If you suspect that a raccoon is living in your chimney, don’t wait. Call the professionals at Raven Termite and Pest Control to find out for sure.
