The Life Cycle of Termites
A termite has three developmental stages:
- Egg: The eggs can be light brown or white and translucent. Although these eggs are tiny, they can be seen with the naked eye.
- Larva: Once a termite egg hatches, the larva (nymph) emerges. Nymphs resemble adult termites, only smaller.
- Adult: When a termite reaches the adult stage, they can be a soldier, secondary reproductive, or worker termite.
Signs of a Termite Infestation
Clicking Sounds
This clicking sound is referred to as \”headbanging,\” and soldier termites make this noise to let other termites know the colony has been disturbed and danger is near. This noise comes from the soldier termite banging its head on wood or shaking his body.
Flying Termites
Flying termites are the first thing you may notice when it comes to termite infestation. These termites can be male or female and are the ones who leave the nest in search of a mate to begin a new colony. You may notice discarded wings around your home.
White Ants
It’s easy to mistake a termite for a white ant, but there are no such things as tiny white ants! When it comes to distinguishing between ants and termites, ants have bent antennas and termites do not. There are also flying ants that can resemble termites. Flying ants and flying termites have two sets of wings, but a termite’s wings are the same size, whereas flying ants have a set of wings that are larger than the other.
