According to some studies, 84% of homeowners in America have experienced a pest problem in the past year. And rats are a big part of the problem. Almost one-third of Americans have had a rat or mouse infestation in their home. Rodents such as rats and mice carry diseases, damage your home, and multiply quickly. Rodents chew on wood, plastic, and wires which can spark an electrical fire in your home. Raven Termite and Pest Control provides rodent control in Baltimore and the surrounding area. If you think you may have rats or mice, please read on.
Is it a Rat or a Mouse?
You can tell the difference between a rat and a mouse from its appearance. Mice are smaller, typically light brown with large ears. Some signs of a mice infestation include droppings that are rod-shaped, and nests made with stored material.
Rats are gray or brown in color and have a long tail. Rats nest in burrows, walls or attics, and leave capsule shaped droppings. Norway rats are most common in the Baltimore area. Norway rats have a heavy and thick body, blunt snout with short ears, and the tails are dark on top while pale underneath.
Rats vs. Mice: Both are Terrible!
There are some differences between rats and mice that will change the nature of the infestation you have. Rats are typically more cautious creatures so they will be more difficult to capture. Mice are quite curious and will investigate new items or areas.
A female mouse can breed as many as ten litters of five to six babies per litter. That is up to 60 mice from one female! Those offspring start reproducing as quickly as six weeks after birth.
A female Norway rat can have up to six litters of 12 babies per litter. Rats start breeding within three months of being born.
How to Prevent Rat Infestations
Prevent rat infestations in your home by keeping your house clean. Clean up all sources of food indoors and outdoors. Tightly seal your trash so that the rats cannot access it. Unfortunately, sometimes those efforts are not enough.
Once you think you have a rat infestation, it is best to call a professional pest exterminator. Rats multiply quickly and carry diseases. Therefore, it is important to get rid of them quickly. A professional exterminator identifies how the rats are getting into the property, where they find food, and ensure the entire infestation is taken care of.
