New Invasive Species

The very thought of invasive species can conjure up images of horror-movie-level infestations of the worst creepy crawlers imaginable. Simply put, an invasive species is an organism that has been introduced into an area where it has never lived. Without a host of natural predators to control the population, these species can reproduce at rapid rates and have a negative impact on the environment as well as the health of the people in the area. An exterminator in Ellicott City can determine if you are in need of services to remove an invasive species in your home.

Asian Giant Hornet

Known as \”murder hornets,\” this species of hornet made its way to North America in 2019. They can be identified by the bright orange-yellow heads and abdomens. They tend to burrow in the ground and even find old burrows to make their home. They are known for destroying honeybee hives and even decapitating the honeybees. If you discover one of their nests, do not attempt to deal with them on your own. Notify your local state department of agriculture and contact an experienced exterminator.

Spotted Lanternfly

The spotted lanternfly was initially discovered in Pennsylvania in 2014 but has since made its way into Maryland. While they are not aggressive with people and other insects, they wreak havoc on the local environment by eating the sap from maple trees, black walnut trees, grapevines, and more. You can identify this species by the dark spots on their light-colored wings. If you see them, report them to the Maryland state department of agriculture and contact an exterminator.

Asian Longhorned Beetle

The Asian longhorn beetle bores into the wood and can be especially damaging during its larval phase. They destroy maple and other hardwoods by boring into the center and preventing the tree from receiving important nutrients. They have been in North America since 1996 when they were first discovered in Brooklyn, NY. They are damaging to the environment and should be eradicated as soon as possible.

Emerald Ash Borer

This one showed up in Detroit in 2002. As the name suggests, this reddish-brown invader thrives on ash trees. The females will lay their eggs in ash trees that then hatch in late spring and begin to damage the tree from the inside out. If you notice ash trees beginning to thin and die, report it to your local department of agriculture as soon as possible.
