Keeping an Eye on Summer Bugs

Summertime in our area means swimming, grilling, and family vacations. It also means mosquitoes, flies, ticks, and ants. If you find that your summer is getting ruined by pests, call on the best exterminator in Silver Spring. At Raven Termite and Pest Control we treat homes and businesses across Washington DC and Baltimore.

Common Bugs You’ll See This Summer

Mosquitoes love standing water. In fact, they breed in it. Be sure to clean up any standing water on your property. Empty kiddie pools, tire swings, and low spots in the ground, and you’ll have fewer mosquitoes around. Wear long sleeves, pants, and insect repellent to protect yourself from the itching and diseases they cause. If mosquitoes are a problem where you live, you should avoid going out at dusk or dawn, the times they are most active. Finally, keep them out of your house by using window screens, and be sure to repair any tears in those screens.
Flies. Speaking of window screens, they’ll also prevent flies from getting into your house. Keep them even further away by securing all trash in lidded containers. If you suspect an infestation of flies in your home, call an exterminator right away.
Ticks often carry some nasty diseases. Keep your grass cut short, and wear closed-toe footwear, long pants, and long sleeves to keep them away from you. Insect repellent containing DEET will also help. You should also remove wood piles and debris from your yard, to give ticks fewer places to hide. Do a skin check of you and your kids and carefully remove any tick you find.
Ants not only ruin picnics and outdoor grilling parties, some of them can really hurt you when they bite. Carpenter ants can even damage your house. To keep the ants away, seal cracks around the outside of your home and keep trees and bushes trimmed so that they don’t touch it. Additionally, keep trash in sealed containers.
