Bed bugs originated in ancient Egypt which means they’ve been an annoyance for humans for more than 3,300 years. Early colonists brought them to the United States. Bed bugs thrived for decades until the 1950s when new pest control products were available. The widespread use of washing machines and vacuums also contributed to the control of infestations. However, in recent years these pesky insects made a comeback. If they have invaded your home and you need a bed bug exterminator in Prince George’s County, contact Raven Termite and Pest Control today!
Learn More About Bed Bugs
Climex lectularius Linnaeus, or bed bugs, are mahogany or rusty brown colored. After they feed, they turn a red-brown color. Newborns, also known as nymphs, are rather colorless until they mature and turn brown. Bed bugs that haven’t fed are oval and flat and those that have eaten are swollen. Nymphs can be anywhere from 1.3 mm to 5mm. Adults are 1/4 inch long.
Bed bug infestations happen quickly because females lay up to five eggs per day. They lay their eggs in cracks in the baseboards, walls, floorboards and in furniture and mattresses. These places offer a dark, safe environment as well as close access to their host. Nymphs go through five stages of development and grow into adults in 21 days. They must eat a meal to molt once during each stage of development. Most bed bugs can stay alive for several months without feeding.
Bed bugs locate their next meal via the carbon dioxide emitted by people and animals. Usually they find exposed bare skin while humans are sleeping. If a home is heavily infested, they will consume blood during the day. Bed bugs insert their feeding tubes into their host. One tube emits the bug’s saliva which numbs the area and then the second one draws the blood.
