Bed Bug Exterminator Explains How to Find Bed Bugs

Bed bugs. The very thought of them is enough to make you itch. If you suspect that bed bugs have invaded your home, finding them is the first course of action. Once you have positively identified bed bugs in the home you can get to work on eradicating them completely.

Are Bed Bugs Hiding in Your Home?

Bed bugs are so small that they are able to fit into a crack as thin as a credit card. Their size makes them incredibly difficult to spot with the naked eye, and they often go undetected until they have completely infested a room. Early detection is critical if you want to prevent the spread to other areas of your home, so look out for these common first signs:

  • Small itchy bites anywhere on your body.
  • Rust-colored spots on your bedding. Bed bugs feed on humans and will leave behind small blood stains where they have been. You’ll usually see these near the edges of the bed. Bed bugs also molt, or shed their skin, several times during their lifetime, so you may find tiny brown exoskeletons during an inspection.
  • It is also common for bed bugs to give off a strong, musty odor similar to that of a wet towel. This is down to the pheromones that the bugs release when in large numbers.

If you have noticed any of these signs around your home, it’s time to get to work. The sooner you can identify a case of bed bugs, the sooner you can have them eliminated completely.

Tracking Bed Bugs Down

Using a flashlight and a flat-edged stiff object like a paint scraper or credit card, check around mattresses, beds, pillows and other areas where you think bed bugs may be hiding. Look out for bugs, eggs, stains, feces and molted skin during your search. We recommend wearing protective gloves during an inspection.
