What are \”Smelly\” Ants?
Odorous ants (aka \”smelly\” ants) can be found in all 50 US states. These tiny, dark brown insects emit a smell similar to rotten coconuts and generally prefer areas where they can find food and moisture, such as kitchens, pantries and dining rooms. You’ll most often see them after a heavy rain, when the storm waters have destroyed their nests and forced them indoors seeking shelter. These ants tend to travel in lines and will emit their odor when disturbed.
Tips for Discouraging Ants
Having ants in your kitchen is not inevitable. There are a number of ways to discourage this onslaught. These include…
- Trimming the trees and bushes near your home. Trees and bushes provide an easy bridge from the outdoors to the interior of your home. Cutting back this foliage makes it more difficult for the ants to get inside.
- Keeping food put away and dishes clean. Properly storing food and not allowing dirty dishes to pile up in the sink is just common sense and will go a long way towards discouraging those \”smelly\” ants. This includes pet food bowls.
